Instructions For Preparing Your Irrigation System For Fall Flush And Winterization:
Step One: Turn Your Controller To The OFF Position
Step Two: Locate The Isolation Valve
Inside your home near the water meter, located on the sprinkler system water supply line, you will find an Isolation Valve. Most generally these valves have either a yellow or green handle.
Step Three: Turning Off The Water.
Once your Isolation Valve is located, you need to turn it to the OFF position. Turn it so that it crosses your water pipe. If the water pipe runs vertical, turn the valve so that it is horizontal forming a T. Please see photo #1. Now the water going to your irrigation system has been turned off.
Step Four: Locating Your Drain
Some irrigation systems are set up with the drain on the inside of the home near the isolation valve, others are located on the exterior of your home near the back flow preventor. ***(If your drain is on the inside of your house, you will need to have a 5 gallon bucket (or similar) and place it under this drain valve.*** If your drain is on the outside of your home, you do not require the bucket.
Step Five: Opening The Drain
Once your bucket is in place (if you require one) you may now open the drain valve for the drain. If your drain is on the exterior of the house you need to open your drain at this time also. To open the drain you simply need to turn the ball handle so that it is in line with the pipe. For example if your water pipe is running vertically, your drain handle should now be running vertically also. A small amount of water will run out of the drain.
Step Six: Prepare The Back Flow Preventor
Go Outside to the back flow preventor. Turn ALL valves on the back flow to a 45 degree angle. Please see photo #2. Once you have successfully completed all six steps your system is now ready for its fall flush
